untitled [inanis saeculum]

untitled [inanis saeculum] is an artist book in which I cut out one of the main characters from my favorite book, memoirs of Hadrian by Marguerite yourcenar.

in the making of this work, I was very interested in the idea of ‘what remains’ of a person’s life once they have been violently erased from history. to articulate this idea, I decided to forcefully erase the main character’s queer lover, antinoo, who also happens to be the only racially othered main character within the narrative of the book.

the result is a document that serves as a testament to the inherent relationship of absence/presence prevalent in the narration of othered bodies within historical storytelling.
